Jesus Christ Superstar was Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's first major commercial success, preceding Evita, Cats, and Phantom of the Opera. The music clearly reflects the recent Woodstock era. Jesus Christ Superstar spent weeks in the British charts as a double LP before the authors adapted it for the stage and premiered it on Broadway. The 1973 Hollywood film adaptation further cemented its status as one of the most successful works of the 20th century, despite some protests from conservative Christians. The play depicts the last seven days of Jesus of Nazareth, loosely based on the Bible, but not as a Passion story. Instead, it presents a tale of revolution, oppression, greed, and, of course, peace and love. Peter Lund, a familiar face, returns to a former stomping ground. He is still fondly remembered by regular theatergoers, especially for his rock opera Jedermann, for which he wrote the libretto and directed.
