The hosts

We took advantage of the opportunity. There had to be a hotel here.

“When we looked out the window and saw the cathedral in all its glory, we were absolutely thrilled. Right there and then, we knew: there had to be a hotel here”, remembers Kerstin Herber, the owner of the Hotel Domizil, located directly across Erfurt Cathedral Square. After that, the ideas for the hotel gradually took form. “But there was still a long way to go, from purchasing the property through project development and the complete renovation of the building to the highest standard”, adds Ms Herber.

A high-quality hotel with a family-run atmosphere

“Now that all the decisions have been made and the first rooms are ready to be booked, I am so happy and proud of what I have done”, says the Erfurt hotelier, who runs this modern and historic establishment with her son Dominic.

The hotel: a piece of living history right by Erfurt Cathedral

“To be honest, what I always wanted was to set up a café at the Anger, the main square in Erfurt, with a paternoster lift that guests and customers could use”, admits Ms Herber with a cheeky smile. She first had the idea back in the GDR days, and even spoke to the local trade office to discuss an operator concept, which in the context of communist-era state-owned establishments like HO and Konsum was laughed off as too advanced. “Then came the Peaceful Revolution and the reunification, and I decided to leave the school for deaf people in Erfurt, where I worked at the time, to found the company Sanierung & Immobilien Herber GmbH with my husband Knut Herber.”

See the cathedral through our guests’ eyes!

The result is eleven stylish and individually furnished double rooms where you can experience the building’s 300 years of history. In some of the rooms, guests can actually see the cathedral from their beds. Behind the renovated façade, not only history, but also the most modern living space can be found.

For example, along with the traditional plasterwork, timber frames and wooden beams, there are elaborate bathrooms with freestanding washbasins, ample glass surfaces, beautiful tiles and shower units embedded in the ceiling.

“My son Dominic and myself want to offer guests an unforgettable experience”, assures Ms Herber. “We look forward to your call!”
